Eel River Squawfish Derby

Eel River Squawfish Derby

The Eel River Squawfish Derby was begun as a way to remove the non-native Sacramanto Squawfish from the Eel River. These fish eat young salmon and steelhead and have contributed to the decline in the native fish populations. The Derby provides anglers with an incentive to catch squawfish by offering prizes for fish turned in. Local businesses donate the prizes and serve as entry stations for the derby. The community is actively participating in solving this natural resource problem.
